Ambassador Kapila Fonseka presented his Credentials to the President of the Republic of Lithuania

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador Kapila Fonseka presented his Credentials to the President of the
Republic of Lithuania, Gitanas Nausėda, at a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Vilnius
on 15 October 2025. Ambassador Fonseka will serve as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Lithuania
with residence in Stockholm. During the presentation of Credentials, he conveyed warm
greetings and best wishes from the President of Sri Lanka, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and
reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to further strengthening the longstanding friendship and
cooperation between the two countries. The Lithuanian President reciprocated with his
greetings to President of Sri Lanka and expressed confidence in the continued strengthening of
bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Lithuania.

During his visit to Lithuania for the presentation of Credentials, the Ambassador held high-level
meetings with senior officials of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These discussions
focused on expanding bilateral cooperation, with particular attention to trade, tourism, and
investment promotion between the two countries, especially in the context of the 30 th
Anniversary of Sri Lanka Lithuania relations next year.

The Ambassador also visited the Vilnius University and held a discussion with the Rector of the
University Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas and the Pro-Rector for Partnerships Dr Arturas
Vasiliauskas. The discussions centered on exploring ways to establish cooperation as well as
academic and research linkages with Sri Lankan universities and research institutes. Established
in the sixteenth century, Vilnius University is the largest and the leading University in Lithuania
with a strong international standing.

During his visit, the Ambassador also met with members of the Sri Lankan community and
students in Lithuania to discuss the challenges they face. He exchanged ideas on possible
solutions and emphasized the importance of closer cooperation between the Sri Lankan
community and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm.

Sri Lanka and Lithuania enjoy cordial and friendly relations and in 2026, the two countries will
mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1996.
