The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm and the ‘Business Sweden’ jointly organized the
‘Sweden-Sri Lanka Virtual Workshop’ to promote investment opportunites in Sri Lanka to
Swedish companies. Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development
Chathuranga Abeysinghe delivered the keynote address to over twenty five leading
Swedish companies who joined the Workshop from across diverse sectors, including
Hitachi Energy, ICA, Tetrapak, SAAB, Freja eID, Candella, IBM. Officials of the Board of
Investment and Export Development Board were also present in the meeting.
Delivering his remarks, Deputy Minister Abeysinghe spoke about the recent structural
reforms and policy initiatives by the Government to further improve Sri Lanka’s
investment environment. The Deputy Minister also shared information on updated visa
schemes for investors and on land reforms for industrial development. Improved
efficiency of the Government service through digital transformation was also highlighted.
Marine, fisheries, value added agriculture, electrical and electronic manufacturing and
value added mineral sectors were highlighted by the Deputy Minister as sectors that
posses further potential for development through foreign investments.
The Virtual workshop was also addressed by Trade & Invest Commissioner of Sweden
to Sri Lanka Sofia Högman, Ambassador of Sweden to Sri Lanka Jan Thesleff,
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Sweden Kapila Fonseka and Honorary Consul-General of
Sweden to Sri Lanka Sanjay Kulatunga. The speakers shared the interest for further
strengthening of business and investment ties between the two countries and the
readiness of the institutions to work in coordination.
Market Manager of Business Sweden New Delhi Pawan Tahlani presented an overview
of Sweden – Sri Lanka trade relations, past collaborations and planned activities. His
presentation included a detailed overview of Sri Lanka’s investment landscape with over
thirty Swedish companies already established in Sri Lanka.
The Embassy of Sri Lanka together with the Office of the Business Sweden intends to
coordinate an investor delegation from Sweden to Sri Lanka in January 2027 aligned
with the Sri Lanka Expo 2027 scheduled to take place in Colombo between 14-17
January 2027. A virtual business matchmaking session in October this year is planned
ahead of the investor delegation visit to Sri Lanka in January 2027.
